"Vedle veškeré kritiky vedené z pozice požadavku přiblížit církev současnému světu, katoličtí tradicionalisté se vehementně dožadovali návratu k Tridentské liturgii a popření reforem zavedených Druhým vatikánským koncilem. Někteří přešli na pozice sedisvakantismu, zatímco další setrvali pod vedením Jana Pavla II., avšak ostře ho kritizovali, že není dost konzervativní. Konzervativci mu také často vyčítají, že se modlil s představiteli nekřesťanských náboženství, navštívil mešitu, políbil Korán apod., čímž vlastně projevil úctu cizím božstvům, která nejsou totožná s Bohem křesťanů[zdroj?], čímž se vlastně provinil proti 1. přikázání desatera. V této souvislosti se mu také vyčítá účast na mezináboženských setkáních v Assisi. Někteří to dokonce považují za apostázi (odpad) od víry.
