Baptist historian Bruce Gourley outlines four main views of Baptist origins:

  1. the perpetuity view which assumes that the Baptist faith and practice has existed since the time of Christ, and
  2. the successionist view, which argues that Baptist churches actually existed in an unbroken chain since the time of Christ.[1] Some people prior to the reformation acknowledge the existence of Baptists and their separation from the church.[2] Sir Isaac Newton stated "Baptists are the only body of known Christians that never symbolized with Rome".[citation needed]
