"Począwszy od II w. p.n.e. w obszarze Gazy zamieszkiwała niewielka społeczność Żydów[potrzebny przypis]. W 1903 r. społeczność ta liczyła 90 osób[2]. Zamieszki w Palestynie w 1929 zmusiły pozostałą grupę 50 Żydów do opuszczenia tego obszaru[3]. W następstwie rozruchów arabskich brytyjskie władze mandatowe zakazały Żydom zamieszkiwania w obszarze Gazy. Mimo tego w 1930 roku grupa syjonistów utworzyła w środkowej części tego obszaru kibuc Kefar Darom. Został on ewakuowany i zniszczony podczas zamieszek arabskich w latach 1936–1939, a odbudowany w 1946 roku[4].
