By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the state began efforts to shape a collective Egyptian identity and promote Egyptian nationalism in response to British rule. The revolution led by Ahmed Orabi has been described as a significant moment in Egyptian history, as it mobilized nationalist sentiment and emphasized an exclusive Egyptian identity.[citation needed] Historically, Egyptians have also referred to the area of Greater Cairo as "Masr",[1][2] which was also used to denote the entire land of Egypt. As a result, and given the common practice of identifying people by their city names, the term "Misreyeen/Masreyeen" sometimes specifically referred to the inhabitants of Greater Cairo.[3]
