Alongside publishing more than 130 scientific papers and 15 patents,[citation needed] McKernan wrote Billy's Halo, published in 2006 and described as part memoir, part popular science.[1] The book describes the death of her father[2] and was shortlisted for the Mind awards in 2007.[3] McKernan also writes comment pieces in national newspapers on the role of academia.[4]
