In 1962, Ustvolskaya decided to concentrate on composing without regard for political compromise. Beginning in the mid-1960s, the Soviet interest in modernist music increased, resulting in wider recognition of Ustvolskaya's music. Eventually the Leningrad branch of the Union of Composers organized performances of her music, which were praised by listeners and critics. International awareness began with several concerts of her music at the 1989 Holland Festival.[citation needed]
