Stand age can also be used to categorize a forest as old-growth.[1] For any given geographical area, it is possible to determine the average time from disturbance until a forest reaches the old growth stage. This makes it possible to determine forest stage.[citation needed] The drawback of using this method to determine whether forests qualify as old-growth is that it does not account for forest characteristics, meaning that forests with old-growth attributes may be excluded due to being too young while forests without old-growth characteristics may be included solely because they are old.[2]
