At the turn of the millennium, metabolic engineering for microorganisms used in fuel ethanol production showed significant progress.[1] Besides Saccharomyces cerevisiae, microorganisms such as Zymomonas mobilis and Escherichia coli have been targeted through metabolic engineering for cellulosic ethanol production. An attraction towards alternative fermentation organism is its ability to ferment five carbon sugars improving the yield of the feed stock. This ability is often found in bacteria [2] based organisms.[citation needed]
