Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are both indoor and outdoor air pollutants.[1] VOCs are a large group of compounds which can cause photochemical smog and aerosols impacting climate. The group includes methane, CO, acetone and toluene. Some can cause cancer, such as butadiene and benzene.[2] Methane is an extremely efficient greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming. Other hydrocarbon VOCs are also significant greenhouse gases because of their role in creating ozone and prolonging the life of methane in the atmosphere.[citation needed]
