During most of the 1980s, New York City—the birthplace of hip-hop—remained the genre's primary creative and commercial center,[1][2] while Los Angeles County played a secondary role.[3] Up until 1988, the Los Angeles hip-hop scene largely reflected hip-hop's dance-oriented and party-based origins, emphasizing DJs and DJ crews as its central figures.[citation needed] The dominant local style was electro rap or “funk hop,”[4] influenced by tracks such as the New York-based 1982 hit "Planet Rock".[1] In contrast, East Coast hip-hop had begun prioritizing lyricism following the commercial and cultural success of Run-DMC's self-titled 1984 album.[3]
