The Board of Agriculture believed that much farming knowledge in Massachusetts came from isolated experiments, making it difficult to draw reliable conclusions.[citation needed] The Reform School farm, comprising about 285 acres (115 hectares) with a mix of soils, offered a suitable setting for more systematic research. While the school already depended on the farm for milk and vegetables, managing it had become an added burden for trustees whose primary focus was education rather than agriculture.[citation needed] A joint committee of the Board and the school’s trustees therefore asked the Massachusetts Legislature to place the farm under the Board’s supervision, arguing that it was better equipped to oversee practical cultivation and carefully planned experiments.[citation needed]
