In January 2024, the Alberta government of Danielle Smith announced plans to ban gender affirming surgeries for minors under the age of 18 and hormones and puberty blockers for minors under the age of 16.[8] The bill implementing said ban, Bill 26, would pass in November 2024.[citation needed] In June 2025, a judge temporarily blocked Alberta's ban, saying that withholding gender affirming care from minors will cause "irreparable harm". Smith has vowed to appeal the ruling,[9][10] and has since invoked the notwithstanding clause to force the implementation of said law.[citation needed] On December 18, 2025, justice Allison Kuntz ruled in favor of the Alberta government, removing the temporary injunction she had previously granted.[11]
