On 5 May, Rajab was arrested at Bahrain International Airport on his arrival from Lebanon the day before a scheduled court hearing relating to a march he had attended in March.[1] Julian Assange said he believed Rajab's arrest was linked to his appearance on Assange's World Tomorrow television talk-show[citation needed] and Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED) associated it with an interview with the BBC's HARDtalk.[2] The following day the Ministry of the Interior issued a statement that Rajab had been arrested for "committing a number of crimes".[3] Before the arrest, Rajab had stated he would not attend the trial, because the Judiciary of Bahrain was "a tool used against human rights defenders and people calling for democracy and justice".[4]
