Agricultural labor focused on work on the school’s farm and gardens and other outdoor tasks, including hauling coal. Coal was initially hauled about 2.5 miles (4.0 kilometers) from the Westborough rail station, a distance later reduced to about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) after a new rail line opened in 1855.[citation needed]
