In page LGBTQ rights in Georgia (country):

"

In the 19th century, Georgia was incorporated into the Russian Empire. In 1835, the Digest of Laws of the Russian Empire was enacted, which was also used in Georgia as in other parts of Russia. Under this new criminal code, the homosexuality was punishable by stripping of all rights and forced resettlement to Siberia. Later the punishment was replaced by imprisonment from four to five years. Recent research by Shorena Gabunia argues that homosexuality was tolerated among Kinto community at the time, who were mostly Armenian traders and entertainers in 19th-century Tbilisi. It is alleged that because Kintos were a marginalized group, the authorities turned a blind eye on their sexual practices[citation needed].
