The two colours also feature in the college's coat of arms, which depicts three mullets in chevron reversed gules, between six crosses crosslet fitched sable. The college's motto, Donec rursus impleat orbem, was originally that of the family of Mary Somerville.[1] Her family befriended the new hall, allowing it to adopt their arms and motto.[3] The Latin motto itself is described as "baffling" as, although it translates as "Until It Should Fill the World Again", the subject of the sentence ("it") is left unspecified.[1] The crest, which is often omitted, is a hand grasping a crescent and occasionally a helmet with mantling is added.[citation needed]
