The script was suppressed by the Japanese during their invasion of China in the 1930s and 1940s,[1] because they feared that the Chinese could use it to send secret messages.[citation needed] Nüshu was further censored during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), where it was seen as occult.[2]
