At the same time, women's political groups in Paris, such as the Society of Revolutionary Republican Women, agitated for equal rights for women since men had been freed by the Revolution. The male revolutionaries were rarely radical when it came to women's rights – they wanted to make the armies more efficient. And they wanted to repress women's political aspirations and keep French women in subservient roles.[citation needed]
