In page Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea:

"

According to James Winn,[1] Anne Finch is the librettist of Venus and Adonis, with music by John Blow; the work is considered by some scholars to be the first true opera in the English language.[citation needed] In his critical edition of the opera for the Purcell Society, Bruce Wood agrees with Winn.[citation needed] However, the recent Cambridge Edition of the Works of Anne Finch contends, "Because her authorship is not established, to consider Finch's desire for anonymity is an act of historical imagination and cannot be used as evidence for her authorship."[2]
