Samantha Holmes played for the Canadian National women's team from 2000 to 2005.[1] Her part in women's hockey history was related to an activist role. As a child she attended the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary. Upon her arrival, she was disappointed to learn that there would not be a women's hockey tournament. After the games she began a letter writing campaign to get women involved in women's ice hockey. She began by writing a letter to her local newspaper. She proceeded by writing to Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion,[2] Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch.[citation needed]
