Irna Phillips died in Chicago on December 23, 1973, aged 72, from undisclosed causes.[1] Harding Lemay wrote her obituary and he and his wife paid to have the words placed in The New York Times. Agnes Nixon learned of Phillips' death when she called her mentor to wish her well on Christmas Day. According to Nixon, Phillips had not wanted anyone to know that she had died.[citation needed]
