Stewart was shocked at the miserable conditions of African American people in Maryland, a slave state, where a relatively high percentage of Black people were free. She eventually took a job as a teacher where she taught reading, writing, spelling and arithmetic. She was paid 50 cents a month while white teachers were paid $1. Her salary was barely enough to cover her monthly expenses. She readily admitted she was not good at handling her finances and to some degree people took advantage.[citation needed]
