Geisha are contracted to work for a specific amount of time based upon the paying customer, and unlike other geisha parties, leave when this time is up. The modern surge of tourism, expendable income, and capitalisation has caused onsen geisha, who historically entertained groups similar in size to those in Kyoto and Tokyo, to increase the size of parties to larger and more profitable banquets such as these.[citation needed]
