During the Joseon period, the city with the most kisaeng by far was Seoul, then called Hanseong, with perhaps 1000.[2] Many of these worked for the court, and helped to fill the vast number of trained entertainers needed for grand festivals.[3] Beautiful or talented kisaeng were often taken from the provinces to Seoul.[citation needed] The required training for kisaeng in Seoul was regular and very strict, with inattentive kisaeng sent home.[4]
