Recounting a meeting with Joyce in the late 1920s, Harpo Marx claimed that she was illiterate.[4] But, she was credited with writing a column in the early 1930s for the spicy New York publication Varieties (not to be confused with the show business trade publication Variety).[citation needed] The column reported gossip about the hijinks and goings-on of public figures in both New York and London.
