In page Ayaan Hirsi Ali:

"

Cisca Dresselhuys, editor of the feminist magazine Opzij, introduced Hirsi Ali to Gerrit Zalm, the parliamentary leader of the centre-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), and party member Neelie Kroes, then European Commissioner for Competition. At their urging, Hirsi Ali decided to switch her party membership and joined the VVD, on whose list she also stood for election to the States General of the Netherlands. Between November 2002 and January 2003, she lived abroad while on the payroll as an assistant of the VVD.[citation needed]
