She stopped the negotiations, but after the providential death of Gabrielle from eclampsia,[4] Margaret returned to her demand for reasons of conscience, in exchange for strong financial compensation and the right to retain the use of her royal title.[citation needed] During the trial, many witnesses reported the fake saying that Margaret had been forced by her mother and brother Charles IX to marry Henry.[5] Pope Clement VIII pronounced the bull of annulment on 24 October 1599. Later, on 17 December 1599, the Archbishop of Arles pronounced the annulment of Henry's marriage to Margaret of Valois.[6] Nearly a year later, Henry IV married Marie de' Medici on 5 October 1600.[7]
