In August 1997, D.C. schools chief executive James W. Becton, Jr. appointed Ackerman as his deputy and chief academic officer.[1] At the time, the federal District of Columbia Financial Control Board oversaw finances and government decisions in the District.[citation needed] She became superintendent of the D.C. public schools from May 1998 until July 17, 2000.[citation needed]
