In October 1574, Margaret left court and travelled to her house in the north. The French ambassador, Mothe-Fénelon, heard that she intended visit her grandson James VI at Stirling. Instead, she again aroused Queen Elizabeth's anger by marrying her younger son Charles to Elizabeth Cavendish, the stepdaughter of the Earl of Shrewsbury.[20] She was again sent to the Tower,[21] unlike the Countess of Shrewsbury,[22] but was pardoned after her son Charles' death in 1576.[citation needed]
