Duley's second novel, Cold Pastoral (1939), is said to be influenced by the case of a real missing child lost in the woods[citation needed]. Reflecting her own life, the book features an orphaned girl who is adopted by an upper-class family in St. John's. The authenticity of the lifestyles of outport life and the poverty of depression-era Newfoundland resonated in the United States and Britain, but received a lukewarm reception in her hometown.[citation needed]
