Hurst died on February 23, 1968, at her Hotel des Artistes apartment in Manhattan, after a brief illness.[5] A few weeks before she died, she sent her publishers two new novels which were never published, one untitled and the other entitled Lonely is Only a Word. Her obituary appeared on the front page of The New York Times.[citation needed]
