Shortly before her 80th birthday, in 2020, she suffered a stroke while editing the finished draft of the novel. Chernin was in rehabilitation when she contracted COVID-19 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in California.[citation needed] She died from the virus at a hospital on December 17, 2020.[3] Both diary and the unfinished novel are archived at the Schlesinger Library together with all her papers, letters and unpublished works.
