In 1889, after returning from their first mission, Gates founded the Young Woman's Journal, a periodical targeted to adolescent Latter-day Saint women.[1]: 199  In 1897, the journal was adopted by the Young Ladies' Mutual Improvement Association.[2] Gates stepped down as editor of the Journal in 1900, after she asked for and was denied a raise based on increased subscriptions to the magazine.[3] She continued to contribute occasionally until it ceased publication in 1929.[citation needed]
