Small bodies of standing water, typically less than 2 Hectare, are termed a pond or pool. They can be natural or human-made.[6] A wide variety of human-made bodies of water are classified as ponds, including water gardens designed for aesthetic ornamentation,[7] fish ponds designed for commercial fish breeding,[8] and solar ponds designed to store thermal energy.[9] Ponds and lakes are distinguished from streams via current speed. While currents in streams are easily observed, ponds possess thermally driven micro-currents and moderate wind driven currents.[10] These features distinguish a pond from many other aquatic terrain features, such as stream pools and tide pools.[citation needed]
