In page Apple III:

"

Some design ideas, including the file system from the Apple III's operating system, Apple SOS, were influential. Apple SOS's file system was incorporated into Apple ProDOS and Apple GS/OS (the main operating systems for the Apple II following the demise of the Apple III) as well as the Apple Lisa (the de facto business-oriented successor to the Apple III). The Apple III introduced the hierarchical file system which influenced the evolution of the Macintosh: the original Macintosh File System (MFS) was a flat file system without subdirectories, designed for a floppy disk; all subsequent file systems were hierarchical. By comparison, the IBM PC's first file system (again designed for floppy disks) was also flat and later versions (designed for hard disks) were hierarchical.[citation needed]
