Faced with overwhelming military might, and lack of American or British intervention or support, Japan conceded the Liaodong Peninsula and revised the Treaty of Shimonoseki to demand an increased indemnity instead of the previous concessions in the region. The subsequent Western "scramble" for Chinese concessions was viewed with distaste in Japan, who then sought to break out of her diplomatic loneliness and cultivate closer, equal alliances with powers in the West to counter such a coalition in the future.[citation needed]
