Since a word marked with an asterisk could mean either "unattested" or "impossible", it is important in some contexts to distinguish these meanings. In general, authors retain asterisks for "unattested", and prefix x, **, , or ? for the latter meaning.[a] An alternative is to append the asterisk (or another symbol, possibly to differentiate between even more cases) at the end.[citation needed]
