In page History of the Maldives:

"

Inhabitants of the Middle East became interested in the Maldives due to its strategic location. Middle Eastern seafarers had just begun to take over the Indian Ocean trade routes in the 10th century and found the Maldives to be an important link to those routes.[1] Specifically, the Maldives was the first landfall for traders from Basra sailing to Sri Lanka or Southeast Asia.[citation needed] Bengal was one of the principal trading partners of the Maldives.[citation needed] Trade between these regions involved mainly cowrie shells and coir fibre.[citation needed]
