By the 1930s, the idea reached Britain from the US. In 1933, a milk farmer Robert William Griffiths established one of Britain's first milk bar in Colwyn Bay which later grew into a chain known as National Milk Bar company.[6] The concept soon spread in Great Britain further, encouraged by the Temperance Society as a morally acceptable alternative to the pub, and over 1,000 milk bars had opened nationally by the end of 1936.[citation needed]
