Graily Hewitt taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and, together with Johnston, published throughout the early part of the century. Hewitt's use of gilding in calligraphy contributed to a prolific output on type design, produced between 1915 and 1943.[citation needed] He is attributed with the revival of gilding with gesso and gold leaf on vellum.
