It is believed to be the result of nuts planted by early settlers in the area. The American Chestnut Council has verified its identity and existence. Efforts have been initiated to protect the property from logging and development.[citation needed] In Lansing, Michigan, Fenner Nature Center is home to a grove of blight-free American chestnuts descended from the grove in Missaukee County.[14]
