Baku gets its name from the word Baguan/Bagavan/Bagawan/Bhagawan which comes from the word Baga, which means "God" in Old Persian,[1] and Bhaga in Sanskrit. It was called Bagavan during the Sassanian rule (22-651 CE).[2] and later became known by its Perso-Arabic name باکو (Bākū). Early Arabic sources also refer to the city as Bākuh and Bākuya,[3] all of which seem to come from a Persian name.[citation needed] The further etymology is unclear.
