"

In 2005, Essendon missed the finals for the first time since 1997, and in 2006, despite a first-round 27-point thrashing of defending premiers Sydney in which newly appointed captain Matthew Lloyd kicked eight goals playing on Leo Barry,[8] the Bombers were uncompetitive for the majority of the season, partially due to Lloyd suffering a season-ending hamstring injuring in Round 3,[9][10][11] recording only three wins and one draw from twenty-two games to suffer its worst season since 1933, as well as recording the least-ever number of votes collectively as a team at the 2006 Brownlow Medal count.[12][13] In Lloyd's absence, David Hille was appointed captain for the remainder of the season. The club improved its on-field position in 2007 but again missed the finals.[citation needed]
