"Sensory innervation of the temporomandibular joint is provided by the auriculotemporal nerve and the masseteric nerve[1]: 412 (both branches of mandibular nerve (CN V3) which is in turn a branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V).[citation needed] Free nerve endings, many of which act as nociceptors, innervate the bones, ligaments, and muscles of the TMJ.[2] The fibrocartilage that overlays the TMJ condyle is not innervated.[3]
