Meanwhile, Walter had started work on the newer HWK 109-509 bipropellant hot engine, which added a fuel of hydrazine hydrate and methanol, designated C-Stoff, that burned with the oxygen-rich exhaust from the T-Stoff, used as the oxidizer, for added thrust. The new powerplant and numerous detail design changes meant to simplify production over the general A-series airframe design resulted in the significantly modified Me 163B of late 1941. Due to the Reichsluftfahrtministerium requirement that it should be possible to throttle the engine, the original power plant grew complicated and lost reliability.[citation needed] The Komet carried no more than 437 US gallons (1,650 L) of fuel, which was exhausted in 4 to 7 minutes, limiting its flight radius to 25 miles (40 km).[3]
