It was discovered that the front-wheel-drive Cord 810/812's Auburn Gear, 4-speed transmission, with the Bendix "Electric Hand" electro-vacuum shifting mechanism, fit the immediate design requirements needed to get the cars built and on the road until a future, automatic in-house transmission was available. This transmission was originally designed to sit behind a standard V8 engine, pointing towards the driven front wheels of the car. However, this transmission had a poor reputation following its original use in the Cord 810: In 1936, when the Cord 810 made its debut at the New York Automobile show, the transmissions were so problematic that they were mostly shown without any transmission installed. Problems abounded until the last Cord was produced in 1937.[citation needed]
