In page Shaftesbury:

"

Shaftesbury has never had a direct railway connection. The challenging topography likely played a significant role in this,[citation needed] as constructing a railway up the steep slopes would have been difficult and costly. In 1859, the Salisbury and Yeovil Railway established a station at Semley, 2+12 miles (4.0 km) north of Shaftesbury. This station allowed residents and visitors to access the broader railway network.
