The origin of the title Imperator totius Hispaniae (Latin for Emperor of All Spain[note 1]) is murky. It was associated with the Leonese monarchy perhaps as far back as Alfonso the Great (r. 866–910). The last two kings of its Astur-Leonese dynasty were called emperors in a contemporary source.[citation needed]
