In February 2024, Norway announced limits on tourism to favor protection of flora and fauna in the archipelago. Cruise ships often carry around 2,000 people, which is too many for a landing spot that has 40 permanent residents.[citation needed] Now, ships are limited to 200 passengers in protected areas, among other regulations, many of which concern the breaking of fast ice, use of vehicles on sea ice after 1 March, and marine traffic near walrus areas. There are 43 defined landing spots.[12]
