Mexican national identity is the product of an ideology promoted by Mexican academics such as Manuel Gamio and José Vasconcelos known as mestizaje, whose goal was that of Mexico becoming a racially and culturally homogeneous country.[2][3][4] The ideology influenced Mexico's national census of 1921, which was Mexico's first post-colonial national census that considered race. In that census, approximately 60% of Mexico's population identified as Mestizos.[5] Subsequent censuses dropped racial categorization, instead favoring language-based categorization.[citation needed]
